San Francisco welcomed Jazz M
ama with a warm reception at the Red Poppy hosted by Meklet Hadero, with live acoustic music by Sila Mutungi. The evening featured Ndaliko’s films Lamokowang and Jazz Mama followed by a community discussion and reception. Thank you to all the supporters who came out to share Jazz Mama!
Jazz Mama, the movement, was initiated by Chérie Rivers Ndaliko and Petna Ndaliko.
Chérie Rivers Ndaliko is a composer whose music is performed internationally, and scholar of African studies (Ph.D., Harvard University). She is a Professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Music Department. Her work combines research and social engagement with a central focus on the power of art – specifically film and music – to initiate and mediate sustainable social change in conflict-ridden regions of Africa.
Petna Ndaliko is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker and activist and the founder of Yole!Africa and Alkebu Film Productions.
